Driving in New Zealand
DriveSafe.org.nz has been developed to help visitors to New Zealand safely enjoy their self-drive holiday.
Driving is a great way to experience all New Zealand has to offer. But driving in New Zealand may be unlike driving in other countries.
This site provides basic information about New Zealand road rules and etiquette, along with links to more details about everything that those unfamiliar with our roads need to know.
The site has three sections:
- Planning your trip
- On arrival
- On the road
Minimum drive times to Fiordland:
SH94 Queenstown to Te Anau: 2 hours
SH94 Queenstown to Manapouri: 2 hours
SH95 Te Anau to Manapouri: 30 minutes
Te Anau to Milford Sound: 2.5 hours
Allow 45mins for parking/walking to terminal Jan/Feb/Mar
While a destination may not seem far away in kilometres, the above drive times do not allow for narrow and winding roads, photo or pit stops, road works or domestics over the map reading.
Winter Driving (May-Sept)
Bylaws are in place May-Nov and may require you to carry snow chains. These can be hired from petrol stations in Te Anau. Please check out the road status for the Milford Road prior, updated every morning at 7:30am.
Summer Driving (Oct-Apr)
Don’t leave it too late...leave early, avoid the rush! Especially during peak periods (Dec/Jan/Feb/March). Parking wardens are around to help find you a spot. With record numbers of self-driving tourists through the tunnel it is recommended you allow an extra 45 minutes to get from your car to the terminal (park n ride or walk).
Expect traffic delays of up to 20 minutes at the Homer Tunnel over the summer months.
